There are many ways to achieve dimming functional. Today we will discuss the difference between 0-10v dimming, triac dimming, PWM dimming and Dali dimming, and understand their principles, advantages and disadvantages. Get to know which dimming way is best for your project.

0-10V dimming

0-10V dimming is also called 0-10V signal dimming. It is an analog dimming method. It is different from the triac power supply in that there are two more 0-10V interfaces on the 0-10V power supply (+10V and -10V), it is to control the output current of the power supply by changing the voltage of 0-10V to achieve dimming. It is the brightest at 10V, and it turns off at 0V. And 1-10V is only the dimmer is 1-10V, when the resistance dimmer is adjusted to the minimum 1V, the output current will also be changed by 10%, if the output current will reach the power output at 10V, the brightness will also be 100%, 1 -10V does not have the switch on/off function, and the lamp cannot turn off as lowest brightness is 10% brightness 1v.

Triac dimming

Triac dimming is a kind of physical dimming. Starting from AC phase 0, the input voltage is chopped, and there is no voltage input until the triac is turned on. The principle is to adjust the conduction angle of each half wave of the alternating current to change the sine waveform, thereby changing the effective value of the alternating current, so as to achieve the purpose of dimming. Triac dimmers have the advantages of high adjustment accuracy, high efficiency, small size, light weight, and easy long-distance operation. They are dominant in the market, and most manufacturers' products are this type of dimmers. The advantages of using Triac dimmers in LED lighting are low dimming cost. And the disadvantage is that the triac dimming performance is poor, which usually leads to a reduction in the dimming range. Because of the properties of triac half-control switches, only The function of turning on the current, but not completely turning off the current, even if it is adjusted to the lowest level, there is still a weak current passing, and the characteristic of LED micro-current light emission makes the LED with thyristor dimming a large amount of light after it is turned off, the LED still has a weak light emission phenomenon. , Has become a problem in the promotion of LED dimming methods.

PWM dimming

Pulse width modulation (PWM) is a very effective technology that uses the digital output of a microprocessor to control analog circuits. It is widely used in many fields, from measurement and communication to power control and conversion, and LED lighting. By digitally controlling the analog circuit, the cost and power consumption of the system can be greatly reduced. In addition, many microcontrollers and DSPs have included PWM controllers on the chip, which makes the realization of digital control easier.

In short, PWM is a method of digitally encoding analog signal levels. Through the use of high-resolution counters, the duty cycle of the square wave is modulated to encode the level of a specific analog signal. The PWM signal is still digital, because at any given moment, the full-scale DC power supply is either completely present or completely absent. The voltage or current source is applied to the analog load in a repetitive pulse sequence of on or off. When it is on, it is when the DC power supply is added to the load, and when it is off, it is when the power supply is disconnected.

As long as the bandwidth is sufficient, any analog value can be encoded using PWM. The figure above shows three different PWM signals.

DALI dimming

DALI dimming products are developed and designed based on the DALI protocol. DALI "digital lighting control international standard, the full name is: digital addressable interface standard, DALI protocol is an open asynchronous serial digital communication protocol. DALI protocol is dedicated The lighting control protocol is only used for lighting systems. It is easy to connect with the building automation system BAS. It is a supplement to the BAS system. The open standard of the DALI protocol makes the compatibility of DALI dimming power very good. By joining the DALI Association and owning all DALI protocols, optical power supply companies can develop and produce power products that meet all DALI standards. As a result, the products can be matched with other manufacturers' DALI control systems, and compatibility problems no longer exist.

The above is one of the essence of DALI dimming, an open protocol-strong compatibility. In addition to the above features, LED dimming power supplies using DALI dimming technology also have the following advantages: precise dimming, addressable, monitorable, and wide dimming range.

DALI dimming is a digital dimming technology that supports 64 addresses. Each LED lamp can be set to an address. The LED dimming power supply (external LED lamp load) can be connected through a signal line and can be grouped and controlled arbitrarily. The control of LED lamps brings great flexibility and possibilities. Combining other sensors and timing control can also achieve more control effects. Because DALI supports two-way communication, it can also monitor the status of the LED lights. Abnormal LED lights can be prompted by the system to facilitate the management and maintenance of the lights in the later period. The LED dimming power supply is equivalent to a sub-control in the DALI dimming control system, and the effect achieved through the DALI master control editing and setting is "stored" in the power supply. 16 groups and 16 scenes can be set in the DALI system, all of which need the cooperation of DALI dimming power supply, DALI master control and other related equipment.

With the development of science and the rapid development of technology, DALI dimming and control technology will not stop. DALI dimming and control technology will be combined with intelligent lighting, and new control forms and more new ones will be produced. Dimming products.
